The barrier or filter material can consist of something as simple as a wound string or yarn to rather complex special membranes called ultra filtration and micro filtration elements. Additionally inert materials such as sand, adsorption materials such as carbon and catalytic materials such as activated manganese ore are used.

Selection of the proper filtration medium is incumbent upon a complete and current water analysis. Properly applied water filters are often the least expensive, most environmentally friendly and longest lasting approach to treating a water problem.
