Case Studies show livestock will drink more water if they like the taste, resulting in better hydration and performance.Water also helps in digestion and elimination of waste. Drinking more water will assist in the prevention of impaction colic.

Dime’s Equine Performance Water Filter System has been built to be portable if needed. If there is no water supply, while you are competing, you can bring your own bottles to assure your horse continues to be hydrated with the high quality water it has been used to drinking.

Vents in lamp for cooling, Thermoplastic coil. Used for final
sterilization of water and prevents cross contamination of water in the hydro-pneu
matic tank.

Equine Hydration:
“The level of water and electrolytes available for sustaining a particular level of performance.”

Facts: Insufficient water leads to dehydration.
*A horse can survive 4 times longer without food than
without water.
*Water represents 40% to 75% of the largest single
*Muscular Tissue of Horses is 75% water.
*Daily water need for horses is 4-8 gallons per day.
*Daily water need for performance horses increase to up to
12-15 gallons per day.
*A -1% loss of body weight by fluid will result in an increase
of core body temperature.
*A -3% loss of body weight by fluid will cause impaired performance.
*A -5% loss of body weight by fluid will cause cardiovascular strain.

During a workout, a 2% to 6% loss of fluid body weight is common for a performance horse.
Example: An average 1100 lb performance horse can lose 33 pounds in a one hour workout. This equates to a little over 4 gallons of water.

The importance of proper Hydration for Horses:
There are five basic nutrients needed to sustain life: vitamins, protein, energy, water and minerals. Water is the most essential nutrient in a horse’s diet.
Dehydrated horses will not eat due to their instinct that water is required for digestion making dehydration in horses even more serious compared to humans and other animals.
Reduced water intake can result in dehydration which can cause a decrease in performance. Water composes the majority of a horse’s body and accounts for several very important functions including:
*Body Temperature Regulating
*Water transports the nutrients throughout the horses body *Aids in the absorption and utilization of nutrients and digestion. *Water is also needed for waste discharge / removal

More Facts:
Thirst is not an indicator of need. It means it’s too late. Water needs to be available to your horse at all times, not just an occasional offering while competing. Electrolyte supplements are essential during competition as well. Problems of Dehydration:

*Excessive loss of water and electrolytes
*Effects performance and thermoregulation (temperature)
*Can be a direct cause for injury and illness.
*Can cause loss of performance

Rhabdomyolysis (tying up) in Horses A more common term for this is called “tying up” and can frequently be pointed towards dehydration (oxygen starvation to the muscles) and electrolyte imbalance. Anyone in the performance industry has seen a horse experience this painful contraction of muscle spasms in the horses back and rear areas. Keeping the horse properly hydrated with a balance of electrolytes has been a very effective preventative measure for performance horses.
